Electronic Braking System (EBS)

One system – triple safety: the EBS Electronic Braking System EBS includes the ABS anti-lock braking system and ASR traction control system components.

Anti-lock braking system (ABS)

  • The ABS uses sensors to detect the speed of every wheel during braking and adjusts the brake pressure individually at each wheel.
  • Wheels are prevented from blocking.

Vehicle directional stability and manoeuvrability remain assured even for emergency braking on a slippery roadway.

Traction control system (ASR)

  • The ASR prevents the driven wheels from spinning when driving off or accelerating.
  • Wheel spinning is detected by the EBS control unit using wheel speed sensors.
  • For the traction control system, the EBS can combine the ASR engine management and ASR brake management with each other.
  • For ASR engine management, the EBS control unit issues a signal over the FFR vehicle management computer FFR to the EDC engine control unit. When both wheels on the driven axle spin, engine torque and therefore traction are reduced.
  • For ASR brake management, the EBS control unit uses the same wheel speed sensors as for the ABS, although it only affects the driven wheels. When only one wheel on the driven axle spins, the spinning wheel is braked to reduce the traction, and the differential transfers the remaining drive torque to the other wheel with road grip.

Benefits

  • Braking with the physically maximum possible brake force in a short response time and therefore a reduction in the stopping distance before the pedal is fully pressed down
  • Controlled braking with high driving stability and manoeuvrability even for emergency braking and therefore ultimate braking reliability even on roadways with different friction conditions
  • Conservation of tyres, as tyre wear is evenly distributed over the circumference.
  • Improved traction on a slippery surface such as ice, snow, gravel or wet cobblestones
  • Increased driving safety: Rear end does not skid at sudden loss of traction
  • Wear-intensive tyre spin is prevented.
